Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian Military (TNI) and Police (Polri) deployed at least 1,250 personnel to secure Nabire District following a clash between rival supporters during a boxing competition at Sport Center Building of Kota Lama Nabire, Papua Province on Sunday evening.

"The situation in Nabire on Monday morning was conducive. We have deployed 150 police officers as well as 100 TNI soldiers," said Chief of Public Relation Division of POLRI Inspector General Ronny F Sompie here Monday.

He said the Papua Regional Police Command added 500 officers and the TNI also 500 other soldiers this morning to beef up security.

Sompie said the police added its forces particularly to secure government offices.

"The regional police command`s chief, the governor and the regional military commander have taken anticipatory efforts and asked the people to keep peaceful," said Sompie.

He added there are at least five persons from boxing committees and seven residents who are now being questioned by the Police in connection with the incident.

The riot started when the boxing championship for the past six days finished on Friday evening in Kota Lama Nabire Sport Center Building.

"The clash occurred when the Bupati (Regent) Cup Boxing Championship committee announced Alpius Rumkone of Sasana Persada as the winner. Meanwhile supporters of his opponent Yulianus Pigome could not accept the decision," Sompie said.

Based on the data the clash claimed 17 lives and injured 39 others consisting of 17 men, 13 women and nine children who are now being treated in Nabire General Hospital.(*)
