The police are hunting down tens of other inmates who have escaped from the prison following the riot in the prison last week.
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Police have captured 102 escapees from the Tanjung Gusta prison in Medan, North Sumatra, since the July 11 mass jailbreak that left five people dead.

"Two more inmates surrendered at the Tanjung Gusta prison and another at the Binjai police resort on Monday," Indonesian Police Headquarters spokesman Snr Comr Agus Rianto said on Tuesday.

The police are hunting down tens of other inmates who have escaped from the prison following the riot, he said.

He said the Indonesian police chief has instructed provincial police chiefs in Sumatra to assist the North Sumatra provincial police in recapturing the other inmates.

He asked the people who know the whereabouts of the inmates to report them to the police. "We also appeal to the inmates who are still free to give in immediately," he said.

More than 210 inmates escaped after creating a riot in the prison last Thursday.

Head of the correctional institution Muji Raharjo said the prisoners escaped at 06.30 p.m. local time after some of them set fire on the prison administration office.

The prisoners also held 15 prison guards hostage before they broke away, he said.

According to initial conclusion, the rioting began after shortage in water supply as a result of electricity problem in the prison, he said.

The prison had about 2,400 inmates before the incident.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has ordered an investigation of the rioting to establish the motive behind it. (*)
