Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia`s benchmark stock index fell on Wednesday to follow the regional trend.

The index of the Indonesian Stock Exchange (BEI) closed 1.03 percent lower at 4,718.10.

Absence of positive sentiment in the region and rupiah weakening prompted profit taking resulting in a decline in the index, HD Capital`s analyst Yuganur Wijanarko said.

The BEI recorded 132,937 transactions on Wednesday involving 2.807 billion shares worth Rp4.091 trillion changing hands with decliners outnumbering gainer 205 to 81.

Regional markets such as Hang Seng recorded a 0.24 percent increase in index to 21,968.93 points with Nikkei-225 index down 0.32 percent to 14,731.28 points and that of Straits Times down 0.52 percent to 3,271.35 points.
