Located in an area with major tectonic Pacific, Indo-Australia, and Eurasia plates..."Ambon (ANTARA News) - A tectonic earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scaled jolted West Southeast Maluluku (MTB) district in Maluku province at 9.53 am local time on Monday.
Data from Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) here showed that the epicenter of the earthquake was located at 7.32 degrees southern latitude and 130 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 121 km under the sea level.
MTB district government official Tonny Luturmas said in the district town of Saumlaki that the people there felt the magnitude of the quake and scrambled out of their houses in fear of another aftershock.
But there has been no further report so far about casualty and material damage from the earthquake.
Located in an area with major tectonic Pacific, Indo-Australia, and Eurasia plates, Maluku province is prone to earthquakes and tsunami.
The Indo-Australia and Eurasia plates meet with the Pacific plate and form irregular faults that could trigger powerful earthquakes and tsunami.
