JAKARTA, Oct. 3, 2013 (ANTARA) -- The Indonesian Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries and the Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) of fishery partnership. The MoU signing was also witnessed by the President Republic of Indonesia Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and the President of People's Republic of China Xi Jinping at the Indonesia's State Palace in Jakarta on October 2.

"It did take such a long time to sign and seal both countries' agreement of the fishery partnership since its initial agreement finished on 2007. It marks the birth of the new era of both countries' fishery partnership, which is expected to be able to further benefit both countries," said the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Sharif C. Sutardjo.

The MoU encompasses a number of paramount points managing the sustainability marine and fishery partnership, such as: the partnership in the investment promotion of the captive fishery and aquaculture; the fish processing and marketing; the eradication of the IUU Fishing; the implementation Of the Port State Measures; the fishery data and information exchange - particularly the exchange of the fishery product export-import data, fish docking data, boat registration and the deletion certificate.The MoU also covers the sustainable captive fish technical collaboration development, the fishery biodiversity protection and other fishery capacity building collaboration.

"Through this finalization of the agreement, it's expected to be able to accelerate the fishery development by strengthening the fishery industrialization, particularly in terms of the facility and capacity building of the integrated domestic captive fish industry," continued the Ministry.

The MoU also helps Indonesia pave the way to fathom the development of the fishery shipyard in Indonesia and the development of the human capital by training the Indonesian fishing boat crew in the Chinese fishing enterprises. The Ministry added, "Both countries will also collaborate to implement the Port State Measure notably adopted by FAO on 2009."


Strategic value

Given Indonesia will hold 2013 APEC Summit leader in Bali, the MoU posseses a strategic value for both countries to promote the trade and investment in Asia Pacific region. This expectation is backed up by the fact that the the Indonesian delegation led by General Director Captive Fishery, Gellwyn Jusuf, suceeded to encase Indonesia as a Non-Cooperating member (CNM) in th Inter American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC). "On September 2013, Indonesia has also successfully ratified the Indonesia's full membership in the The Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC),” concluded the Minister.
