President Yudhoyono has slammed the incident saying that such vandalism..."Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has slammed the riots that took place in the Constitutional Court on Thursday through his special staff for communication Daniel Sparringa.
The riots took place while the verdict in a lawsuit against the results of a recent election held in the Maluku province was being delivered.
"President Yudhoyono has slammed the incident saying that such vandalism is a direct attack on the integrity of the court system in this country," Sparringa said in a press release on Friday.
He further added that President Yudhoyono hoped that the police personnel will step up security in the court room and, if necessary, the security of the judges in or outside the courtroom.
The president also called on all parties, including judges, prosecutors and lawyers to respect the court system and ensure that every trial session proceeded smoothly without distraction from anyone or anything.
On Thursday, dozens of persons, believed to be the supporters of candidates running for governor, who had filed a lawsuit against the results of a recent election held in the Maluku province, ran amok in the courtroom of the Constitutional Court after the court ruled against their demand.
The rioters are believed to be supporters of H Abdullah Tuasikal-Hendrik Lewerissa, Jacobus F Puttileihalat-Arifi Tapi Oyibhoe, H Adhan Dambea and H Inrawanto Hassan, who had demanded a repeat election due to their dissatisfaction with the results of the recent election.
The rioters had vandalized television monitors, microphones, a glass notice board and chairs in the courtroom.
Two people have been named as suspects in the case, while 15 others are still being questioned by the police.
