Officially, no single party has so far approached us."Surabaya, East Java (ANTARA News) - Muhammadiyah chief Din Syamsuddin said political parties have approached his organization to seek their support prior to next years legislative and presidential elections.
"They have, indeed, approached us, unofficially, and the number is not just one or two," he told newsmen after inaugurating a Muhammadiyah East Java business center on Jalan Ahmad Yani here on Saturday.
Din, however, declined to mention the names of the political parties, saying that it was unethical because they remain unofficially interested in support from his organization.
"It is still being done verbally, and so it is not yet official. Officially, no single party has so far approached us," he said.
When asked about his readiness to become a presidential or vice presidential candidate, Din signaled his willingness if any party nominated him.
However, he said he remains committed to stay at the helm of Muhammadiyah until 2015, if the organization authorizes him to continue.
"If the board agrees and lets me run, I will run. If it does not agree, I will not run," he said.
As general chairman of one of the countrys largest Islamic organizations, he said he has a responsibility as a cadre, as well as a leader, and therefore coordination and consultation are needed before a decision is made.
As a man who has no political party, Din said he would not nominate himself as a presidential or vice presidential candidate.
However, he said he would think twice before saying yes if he is nominated by certain parties.
Din said Muhammadiyah would not involve itself directly in politics. He said Muhammadiyah could only give suggestions and ideas, as well as solutions for developing the country.
"Muhammadiyah is aware of its role, and would not become involved directly in power politics. It would only be involved in moral politics. If any party wishes to propose cooperation to cadres from Muhammadiyah, we have a lot to offer," he said.
