Jakarta (ANTARA News) - National Police Chief Gen Sutarman has reminded all police personnel to keep vigil on any acts of terrorism that could happen during Christmas and the New Year celebrations.

"Security must be stepped up against possible acts of terrorism at houses of worship and public areas during Christmas and New Year," warned Sutarman during the Candle Light Operation 2013 show of force, here on Friday.

The Indonesian Police will conduct the Candle Light Operation 2013 ahead of Christmas and New Year celebrations in Indonesia, by deploying more than 86 thousand security personnel to ensure public safety and order.

Sutarman revealed that at least 944 personnel from the National Police Headquarters and more than 86 thousand personnel from the regional and resort police commands from across the country will be deployed to ensure security and public order, as well as to prevent any eventuality, during the celebrations.

Sutaraman noted that police officers would be stationed at certain locations, such as houses of prayer, shopping centers, recreation areas, gas stations and others.

Meanwhile, Indonesian Military (TNI) Chief General Moeldoko stated here on Wednesday that the TNI personnel would assist the police to provide security during the Christmas and New Year activities.

"We have offered assistance to the Indonesian police and are coordinating with the Indonesian Police Chief, the Health Ministry and related ministries, which are all led by the Security, Law and Politics Coordination Minister," Moeldoko stated.

The assistance is focused on efforts to provide security to those Indonesian people who will step out for worship during the festival period.

"The TNI soldiers are fully prepared to assist the police in order to maintain security," Moeldoko remarked. (*)
