Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Jakarta will field about 3,000 public order security (Satpol PP) officers to help police secure the 2014 New Year celebrations.

"We will field about 3,000 Satpol PP officers to help police secure the New Years Eve festivity," Jakarta Satpol PPs Head Kukuh Hadi Santoso said here on Monday.

He said that the 3,000 officers would be stationed at crowd centers in five Jakarta municipality areas. "Places frequented by crowd of visitors such as the Indonesia in Miniature Park (TMII), the Ancol Dream Land, the Old City and others will be guarded," Kukuh said.

"Our focus will be on the Jakarta Night Festival organized by the Jakarta administration to welcome the 2014 New Year," he added.

Kukuh said in carrying out their tasks to guard the turn of the year celebrations, Satpoll PP members would not be equipped with firearms.

"They will take persuasive approach in maintaining order so that there is no need for them to be equipped with arms," he added.

Jakarta Regional Police Deputy Chief Brig. Gen Sudjarno said he would deploy around 10.1 thousand personnel to maintain security during Christmas and New Years Eve.

"Together with the military, we will have about 10.1 thousand personnel maintaining law and order," he pointed out.

Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo, popularly known as Jokowi said earlier that his administration would hold festivities to welcome the New Year.

"The festivities will not be centered on Jalan Sudirman-Thamrin-National Monument (Monas) only because each municipal office in five Jakarta Greater areas will hold the same festival," the governor said.

He said that the festivals would be held at municipal offices so that they would not create serious traffic jams.

On security matters, Jokowi said he would focus on preventive measures to maintain security and reduce crimes.

"I think there will be no crimes, but I will focus on crime prevention measures. We will undertake intelligence operations in advance to anticipate and prevent criminal acts from occurring," Jokowi said at City Hall last week.

He said during the festival period, public transportation for the southern part of the city would be based from Duku Atas for the convenience of commuters who want to go home from South Jakarta.

"Public transportation will be available at Dukuh Atas, not at Blok M station, to ensure commuters can go home using public transport," Jokowi noted.

The governor added his office would cooperate with the police and military personnel to maintain order, given the increased number of revelers in the city during the festival period.

"I think it will be better if we deploy officers from the Jakarta Regional Police and the Jakarta Military Command. We will have detailed discussions about that later," the governor stated.(*)
