Jakarta (ANTARA News) - At least 100 students from East Kalimantan, Indonesia will study in Russia to tighten bilateral cooperation in education and engineering sectors.

"The Russian government will provide scholarships for 100 Indonesian students from East Kalimantan in 2014, following the development of the railway project in the province," the Indonesian Ambassador for Russia Djauhari Oratmangun stated here, on Sunday evening.

According to Djauhari, the East Kalimantan Governor, Awang Farouk Ishak, will send 50 students in the first group to study in Russia.

He pointed out that the students will begin to learn Russian language in May and then start studies in August 2014.

The Ambassador added that the students will study engineering in Russia to support the development of infrastructure and transportation facilities in East Kalimantan.

"The Governor's target is to send at least 300 students to Russia in the next one or two years. The East Kalimantan Administration will fund and provide scholarships for them," Djauhari elaborated.

Previously, explained the Ambassador, Governor Awang had visited Russia to sign the Memorandum of Understanding with several universities in the country.

The Ambassador also explained that there are seven universities in Russia that teach Indonesian Literature to the local students.

"The people to people contact between Indonesia and Russia is interesting. Russian students in seven universities are learning Indonesian literature. The Indonesian Embassy in Russia also provides Bahasa Indonesia course for Russians who are willing to study the language," Djauhari explained.

The total number of Indonesian students who will study in Russia from 2013 to 2014 is 132 people.

Previously, the Indonesian Education and Culture Minister, Muhammad Nuh, had issued additional scholarships to 132 persons in Russia as the pioneer students.

"They got scholarship from both Russian and Indonesian governments. Minister Nuh also gave pioneer scholarships to 132 students," Djauhari stated.
