Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The decline in the vote gain of the ruling Democratic Party (PD) in April 9 legislative elections reflects peoples dissatisfaction of the governments performance, former PD general chairman Anas Urbaningrum stated.

"Ups and downs in elections (are reflection). I think, the decline (in PD vote gain) reflects the dissatisfaction of the people," Anas declaired at the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) building here on Friday.

Anas visited the KPK office for the questioning on his alleged involvement in the development of the Hambalang Sports Complex project, by receiving a gift.

The quick count results of the April 9 legislative elections by the Indonesian Survey Circle (LSI) showed that the Democratic Party secured 9.72 percent of the votes while quick count results by the Center for Strategic and International Studies and the Cyrus Network put PDs vote gain at 9.1 percent.

In the 2009 legislative elections the Democratic Party, based on the official count of the General Elections Commission (KPU), won 20.85 percent of the votes, followed by the Golkar Party 14.45 percent and the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) 14.03 percent.

"The survey results indicate the level of public satisfaction towards the governments performance drastically drops. This is a normal yardstick for democracy which applies everywhere," Anas remarked.

He added that if the ruling partys performance satisfied the public it would enjoy an electoral incentive, but if not, the public will respond, which will have an impact on the main party in the government.

"This is particularly so for the main pillar party of the government. This is a common formulation everywhere. So, if PD, for example, gets only 9 - 10 percent, I think the figure is extraordinary," Anas asserted.

The matter is extraordinary because PDs campaigns were conducted by different parties within it, he argued.

Anas Urbaningrum, in the alleged Hambalang Sports Complex corruption case, is charged under the fb or Article 11 Law No. 31/1999 as amended into Law No. 20/2001 on State Officials who take bribes or gratification and is punishable by life imprisonment or a minimum of 4-20 years in prison and a fine of Rp200-Rp1 billion.

In a prosecutors indictment on former sports and youth affairs minister Andi Mallarangeng, Anas was mentioned to have taken a bribe of Rp2.21 billion to help smooth his bid for PD chairmanship in the PDs 2010 congress. The money was provided in stages on April 19, 2010 up to December 9, 2010.

In a money laundering case, Anas was charged with article 3 and or Article 4 of Law No. 8/2010 on the Prevention and Eradication of Corruption and or Article 3 point 1 and or Article 6 point 1 Law No. 15 /2002 as amended based on Law No.25/2003 in lieu of Article 55 point 1 ke-1 of the Criminal Code on Hiding Wealth from criminal acts.

People charged with the article are punishable by a maximum 20 years imprisonment and a fine of Rp10 billion.(*)
