Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Palestines ambassador to Indonesia Fariz Mehdaawi expressed gratitude to the Indonesian people here on Monday for their support to his country, which has so far been oppressed by Israel.

"Thanks for all the support that the Indonesian people have provided," he said after attending the inauguration of Dino Patti Djalal as the vice minister of foreign affairs.

He said with regard to dealing with Israeli attacks on Gaza Strip, which has resulted in the deaths of many citizens including women and children, not only Indonesia but also many other countries have cooperated.

The cooperation, he said, is aimed at pressurizing Israel to end its attacks.

He said currently thousands of children are suffering, while many others had to be evacuated to Egypt to obtain adequate medical treatment.

"We need UNs action," he added.

The Indonesian government has condemned Israels recent military action in Gaza.

"Indonesia condemns the Israeli military action in Gaza, which has claimed a lot of civilian and innocent lives and created a new obstacle to create conducive conditions for peaceful process," Indonesias foreign minister Marty Natalegawa said in a press statement on Thursday.

Marty said the Israeli offensive must be curbed because it had increased the suffering of the Palestinian people in Gaza and West Bank.

He also urged for immediate end of Palestinian occupation by Israel, which is the crux of the problem, through peaceful negotiations to achieve a two-state solution.

"To deal with the Israeli stance, the UN Security Council, the UN, and the international community in general must pressurize Israel to immediately end its violence on Palestinian civilians in Gaza. The cycle of violence in the region must be stopped," he said.(*)
