Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Medical Emergency Rescue Committee (MER-C) has been trying to speed up the opening of Indonesian Hospital at Bayt Lahiya, North Gaza, Palestine, to treat victims of Israeli air strikes, a MER-C spokesman said.

Despite a plan on the hospitals soft launch in December 2014, MER-C will do its utmost to make the hospitals emergency unit functioning as soon as possible, MER-C Indonesias Operational Manager Rima Theresia Manzanaris said here on Monday.

Gaza is currently in a volatile condition due to Israeli military attacks that has killed at least 172 people and injured 1,200 others. The UN said 17,000 people had sought refuge in its facilities as Israeli air strikes have been continuing for the seventh day.

"The Indonesian Hospital is built at Bayt Lahiya, which is only 2.5 kilometers from the Israeli border, where many people were killed during the Israeli aggression in 2008-2009," he said.

Amid incessant Israeli air strikes, MER-C is trying to acquire medical equipment so the hospital could operate its emergency unit in the nearest future, he said.

MER-C has collected public donation worth Rp13.5 billion to buy the medical equipment, little short from the actual requirement of Rp15 billion, he said.

The Indonesian Hospital was constructed at a total cost of Rp50 billion, and Rp15 billion will be required to buy medical equipment and devises for the hospital, he explained.

At present, 19 volunteers of MER-C Indonesia are in Gaza to help operate the hospital.

"The Indonesian Hospital is expected to help treat patients suffering from physical trauma and rehabilitate them, so they could go back to their normal lives," he said.

The traumatology and rehabilitation hospital had been built on a total land area measuring 16,261 square meters provided by the Palestinian authorities. The two-story hospital will have 100 beds.

The hospital will have one emergency unit, four surgery rooms, one intensive care unit, a laboratory, radiology installation, polyclinic, medical rehabilitation unit, a pharmacy, a kitchen, a laundry room, and a boiler room.
