The founders of the festival include Chen Xianghong, Stan Lai, Huang Lei and Meng Jinghui while Eugenio Barba, a renowned theatre director based in Denmark's Odin Theatre, will be the honorary chairman of this year's Metamorphoses-themed event.
The well-known drama, The Green Snake, put on by the China National Theatre will mark the opening of the event while the event will close with the US-produced hit drama The White Snake, written and directed by Tony Award winner Mary Zimmerman. The Tony Award is considered the highest U.S. theatre honor. Mary Zimmerman's The White Snake brings the classic Chinese fable to life from a unique perspective by incorporating Chinese traditional opera elements. In addition, the festival will present La Voz Humana and The Elfin in Wall, two actress monodramas, as well as The Twelfth Night and The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged), both of which are staged in the celebration of the 450th anniversary of William Shakespeare's birth.
Twelve dramas shortlisted in the Young Theatre Artist's Competition and over 1,500 street theatre performances led by more than 300 art performance teams and street artists from around the world will further complement the Wuzhen Theatre Festival.
Wuzhen will become a water town paradise for drama fans.
