If the construction of rented public apartments can be accelerated, there will be no slum areas by the end of 2015 or early 2016, Ahok said.
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The acting governor of Jakarta, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, said that he plans to rid the capital city of all slum areas by the end of 2015 or early 2016.

If the construction of rented public apartments can be accelerated, there will be no slum areas by the end of 2015 or early 2016, Ahok, as the acting governor is popularly called, affirmed here on Monday.

According to Purnama, a deterrent to the speedy construction of the public apartments was the process of inviting bids, which takes a long time.

As a short-term solution to the slow bidding process, the acting governor suggested using an electronic catalog system wherein payments would only be made to those who carry out the construction work.

Under the system, anyone could build a public apartment, which would speed up the construction process and 50,000 units could be built in a year.

Ahok added that he also plans to refer the management of the rented public apartments to social services, while the public housing service will only be given the task of constructing them.

Technical procedures, such as calling for bids, have led to the slow development of the rented public apartments, he pointed out, adding that he would look for more ways to accelerate their construction.

With regard to proposals for handing over the management of the apartments to private parties, Ahok said it will not be necessary because he believes that the Jakarta administration had plenty of capable personnel to handle it.(*)
