Jakarta (ANTARA News) - A total of 7.24 million people in Indonesia remained jobless until August this year.

"The rate of open unemployment reached 5.94 percent out of the 121.87 million workforce," Suryamin, the head of the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), stated here on Wednesday.

"August is close to the school year end. Some school leavers do not start working or continue their studies, and thus, they have been categorized as unemployed," he pointed out.

The total workforce in the country in August this year reached 121.87 million, an increase of around 1.7 million as compared to the same month last year, or 3.4 million from February 2014.

Based on data furnished by the BPS, the employed workforce reached 114.63 million in August 2014, with participation rate reaching 66.6 percent.(*)
