Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has outlined four priorities pertaining to the defense policy that have to be solid, long-term, and integrated into a comprehensive defense system.

"I want to emphasize on four priorities," President Jokowi remarked while opening a Defense Industry Policy Committee Session, here, Tuesday.

The first priority focuses on meeting the needs of national defense, which include improving the welfare of military personnel and increasing the procurement of main weaponry defense equipment.

The second priority aims to develop the defense industry for attaining self-sufficiency in defense equipment and reducing the dependence on weapon imports.

The third priority has been outlined to strengthen the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) to become a respectable force.

The fourth priority is to incorporate the national defense policy as an integral part of the comprehensive security system.

The head of state instructed that the four priorities should be achieved simultaneously by ensuring that every weaponry purchase deal is accompanied by a transfer of technology, particularly for the strategic defense industry.

Jokowi also highlighted the importance of the weaponry production cycle to curb the tendency to import weapons.

The meeting on defense industry policy was attended by Vice President Jusuf M. Kalla, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Tedjo Edhy Purdijatno, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Indroyono Soesilo, National Development Planning Minister/Head of National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) Andrinof Chaniago, and State Enterprises Minister Rini Soemarno.(*)
