Tokyo (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian Vice President M. Jusuf Kalla said every country, including Indonesia, needs international cooperation in disaster mitigation to improve risks reduction.

"Indonesia is not able to recover the condition after natural disaster in the area without immediate international assistance," Kalla delivered his speech on UN Conference on Disaster Mitigation held in Sendai, Japan, on Saturday (Mar 14).

According to Kalla, the rate and frequency of damages caused by disaster are increasing and negatively affect many people.

Vice President said the economic risk and the damage of development in the area of disaster increased faster than the economic development.

Thus, the prevention through the disaster risk reduction is needed to avoid the losses.

"Indonesia as same as Japan is the country that are prone to natural disaster. The readiness of natural disaster mitigation should be included into national priority and development agenda as the consequences," Kalla said.

During the Aceh tsunami in 2004, Aceh Province become the worst impacted area that claimed 200,000 casualties.

Indonesia has multiple the natural disaster mitigation effort by changing the emergency response and recovery to a more comprehensive approach of disaster mitigation.

"Allow me to express appreciation to more than 50 friendly countries, including Japan, which are generously providing assistance and donations to rebuild and rehabilitate Aceh which hit by tsunami in 2004 and Yogyakarta earthquake in 2006," Kalla said.

Indonesia has invested budget to enhance disaster prevention, mitigation and readiness effort as the main priorities by integrating disaster risk reduction in the development agenda.

Vice President said Indonesia have special attention to enhance local capacity and effort as well as utilizing the local wisdom in every peoples group to reduce the disaster risks.

"We are understand the disaster mitigation efforts need long term efforts and international cooperation in every level to enhance the capacity of developed countries to have disaster resistance," Kalla said.

Indonesia believes the bilateral partnership to neighboring country needs to be developed and promoted in regional or global level.
