Yes, reclamation and regreening programs need to be implemented in the river`s upstream area."
Palembang (ANTARA News) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has lauded the reclamation work on Musi River in South Sumatra Province and the regreening program in the upstream area and along the river banks.

"Yes, reclamation and regreening programs need to be implemented in the rivers upstream area. I call on the environmental affairs and forestry minister to follow up and include them in the maritime development program," President Jokowi said here, Thursday evening.

The reclamation work on Musi River should be included in the sea toll development plan as it plays a crucial role in boosting regional and national economic growth, he emphasized.

The Musi River is the longest in Indonesia, with a total length of 250 kilometers. During the Sriwijaya kingdoms era, the river was the main route for transportation and trading, particularly used by traders from China.

"The function of Musi River, as a route for conducting commerce among islands and for services and exports, must be maintained," he noted.

Environmental Affairs and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya highlighted the need to conduct a study on the Musi River in order to gain collective support of the regional and national authorities to develop the river.
