The conference of parties to launch the collective initiatives as part of efforts to promote efficient, renewable energy will be held at the venue of the climate change conference at Le Bourget in Paris on Monday (December 7).
Director General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation at the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry Rida Mulyana said that Indonesia has committed itself to use 23 percent of renewable energy sources by 2025.
"Many said the target is too ambitious as at this moment we only use 5 percent of renewable energy sources," he said.
He said Indonesia still relies heavily on fossil energy. Yet the biggest contributor to the countrys gas emissions is not energy but the clearing of forested land to make way for farms.
Increasing the use of renewable energy will help reduce the release of carbon into the atmosphere and prevent the average global temperature from increasing, he said.
But based on the proposal by the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry to develop electrical power plants until 2019, nearly 20 thousand MW of 35 thousand MW will be produced by coal-fired power plants, he said.
"The available instruments still make it possible to develop coal-fired power plants, while it takes time to develop renewable energy," he said.
The Indonesian government is offering investors to develop renewable energy, he said.(*)
