Langkat, North Sumatra (ANTARA News) - Five Indonesian fishermen have been arrested by Malaysian maritime police and now held at a Pulau Penang jail.

The traditional fishermen from Sei Bilah, sub-district of Sei Lepan, Langkat , North Sumatra were arrested when they were fishing in the sea on Tuesday.

The five men are Mainan (45), Fajar Bahari (21), Ab Bakar (34), Putra (35) and Sony (27).

"We just received the report from relatives of one of the fishermen ," said Azhar Kasim , a community leader in Pangkalan Brandan on Wedenesday.

Kasim said he hoped the government would help in the release of the fishermen .

He accused the Malaysian maritime police of kidnapping the fishermen as they were caught in the Indonesian side of the sea border.

It was the fourth time Langkat fishermen caught by Malaysian maritime police in the past three months, he said.(*)
