We have to integrate it within the regulations."
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The RIL-C method developed by The Nature Conservancy (TNC) can be used to measure carbon emissions, Director for Terrestrial Program of TNC Indonesia Herlina Hartanto stated here on Thursday.

Hartanto remarked that after undergoing a peer review process, the RIL-C method was officially registered as a global verification standard on April 28, 2016.

According to Hartanto, the method will serve as a reference for the measurement of Verified Carbon Standard.

Hartanto explained that based on a study and experiment, the application of the RIL-C method can reduce emissions by 40 percent as compared to the baseline.

Therefore, if the method is applied by all holders of the Timber Forest-Natural Forests Production License, who currently manage 20 million hectares of production forests, then it will help the government reduce emissions by 2030 as mentioned in the Intended Nationally Determined Contributions.

A study by TNC published by a scientific journal of Global Change Biology revealed that standard logging activities currently carried out by license holders caused average emissions of 51.1 tons of carbon per hectare.

However, most license holders have failed to optimally apply the concept of sustainable forest management.

Director General of Sustainable Forest Management of the Ministry of Environment and Forests Ida Bagus Putra Parthama affirmed that the RIL-C methodology was an excellent breakthrough.

"We have to integrate it within the regulations. We hope RIL-C will be a breakthrough in sustainable forest management and will help to reduce emissions at once," he added.
