Thakher City is an integrated development located roughly 2.5 kilometers from the Grand Mosque.
In a statement issued in Jakarta on Sunday, Danantara CEO Rosan Perkasa Roeslani said the transaction marks the company’s first step into Mecca’s hospitality sector and forms part of a phased, long-term strategy to improve services for Indonesian Hajj and Umrah pilgrims.
“Every year, more than two million Indonesians perform Umrah, while the number of Indonesian Hajj pilgrims consistently exceeds two hundred thousand,” he said.
The investment covers one operating hotel and a series of hospitality-focused development assets with a potential capacity of up to 5,000 hotel rooms, all subject to further studies and regulatory approvals.
Danantara and Thakher Development Company agreed to acquire Novotel Makkah Thakher City, an operating hotel with 1,461 rooms, along with 14 plots totaling approximately 4.4 hectares designated for future development.
The plots will be developed under an integrated master plan that includes hospitality, retail, and other supporting facilities, aligned with Makkah’s broader urban development framework.
Roeslani said the agreement lays the groundwork for Danantara’s long-term involvement in Saudi Arabia’s hospitality sector.
The transaction is supported by Al Khomasiah Real Estate Development, a strategic local partner providing market insight and development expertise in Mecca.
All development stages will be carried out in coordination with relevant authorities in Saudi Arabia and Indonesia, in accordance with applicable licensing and governance procedures.
Danantara Indonesia is also coordinating with the Government of Saudi Arabia through the Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites (RCMC) as part of the ongoing bidding process for the first phase of this long-term collaborative development.
