Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Condemning the terror attack in Nice, France, that claimed more than 70 lives, General Chairman of Indonesias Golongan Karya (Golkar) Party Setya Novanto has urged the government to protect Indonesian nationals living in that country.

"Such terror acts are inhuman and barbaric. Moreover, the attack took place on the anniversary of the independence of France," Novanto noted in his written statement received here on Friday.

Novanto said the Golkar Party has called on the Indonesian government, through its foreign affairs ministry, to express its sympathy and to offer support to catch the perpetrators of the terror incident.

"The Golkar Party has also urged the Indonesian Foreign Ministry to warn its nationals in France to maintain vigil against acts of terror," he pointed out.

Some 725 Indonesian citizens are living in Southern France of which about 10 families reside in Nice and its surrounding regions, according to data.

Citing the local prosecutor, French TV channels reported early on Friday that at least 73 people had been killed and several others injured when a truck drove into a crowd in Nice, Southern France, Xinhua reported.

Meanwhile, Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi, soon after receiving information on the terror attack, ordered the Indonesian consul general in Marseille to check the condition of Indonesian citizens in Southern France and its surrounding areas.

In addition, the staff of the Indonesian consulate general in Marseille had conducted a search of several locations and has contacted the citizens living in Nice and its surrounding areas.

Earlier, the Indonesian government on Friday had strongly denounced the terror attack in Nice, France, which led to the deaths of more than 70 people and injuries to hundred others.

"The government has condemned the attack and has expressed sympathy to the relatives of the victims," the foreign office added.
