Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara (ANTARA News) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) spoke of the important role that families play in developing the nations work force.

He said here on Saturday that mere physical development will not be enough, but social institutions such as families can play an important role in developing future workers.

"Physical development is not enough. The role of social institutions, like a family, is also important," he said in his speech at the commemoration of the 23rd National Family Day in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara province.

He noted that the government had carried out various physical and system development efforts so that the entire country could benefit from them, in a bid to boost the nations potentials and productivity.

He said, however, that physical development would not be enough and the development of social institutions, such as families, are also important, since human development begins in the family.

"It is within families that a persons character, mentality and mindset are built," he said.

In view of that, he said the commemoration should be understood as part of efforts to strengthen the functioning of the nations families.

Some 12,000 people attended the event, which was also marked by the presentation of awards to participants of national family planning.

To them, President Jokowi said, "Continue your service, spirit and achievements to make the family planning and family development programs successful.
