The president was on a two-day working visit to the province.
Accompanied by Chief of Staff of President Teten Masduki and Banten Governor Rano Karno, Jokowi performed Eid al-Adha prayers at the Ats Tsauroh mosque in Serang City.
First Lady Iriana Joko Widodo, Kahiyang Ayu and Kaesang Pangarep, her daughter and son, also celebrated Eid al-Adha in Serang city.
The story of Prophet Ibrahims sacrifice was related by Husnul Iman, a preacher, at the Ats Tsauroh mosque.
The story implied sincerity in working and fighting, he said.
The sacrifice worship is important for the people to remember God and lead a devout life, he added.
Eid al-Adha is the spirit of sacrifice for the nation and the state, the president said earlier.
The head of state reminded the entire society to jointly take part in building the prosperity of the nation and provide help for needy residents.
In addition, Eid al-Adha was also interpreted by Jokowi as an inspiration to work harder, with mutual co-operation, to build cities and regions in order to make Indonesia a winner in global competitions.
"This day of sacrifice should inspire all of us to co-operate and work harder for the country, for the citizens, for the city, for the district, for the nation, and for the environment," Jokowi said.
On Sunday, the president handed over a 900-kilogram cow for qurban (sacrifice) to the people of Banten in Karang Antu Village.
During his working visit, the president toured several locations in Banten to distribute supplementary food for pregnant women and students to avoid malnutrition.(*)
