Makassar, S. Sulawesi (ANTARA News) - The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Asia is interested to provide assistance to the Makassar city administration for establishing a transportation management system.

"We are interested in helping the administration, mainly to help Makassar realize its public transportation innovations," UNDP Asia Director Paavani Reddy said here on Tuesday.

She added that the city administration is currently focusing on developing its mass transportation system in order to cope with high population growth.

Makassar is considered one of the busiest and the fastest developing cities in Indonesia.

"Makassar is a metropolis. Congestion is a main problem in this city," Reddy observed.

UNDP will ask information from the Makassar Mayor M. Ramdhan Pomanto. It will also use information collected from people and the communities.

Information gathered from the people is important and can form the basis for introducing innovations in the transportation system.

Meanwhile, Makassar Mayor M. Ramdhan Pomanto noted that the administration is now developing an organized public transportation system

One of mass transportation system under development is what is locally "pete-pete" smart ssystem.

In addition, the administration is also building comfortable and safe sidewalks.

According to the mayor, sidewalks will be integrated with the public transportation system as people need walking space to access any mode of transportation.(*)
