A press release issued by the Permanent Mission of Indonesia to the United Nations in New York and received here on Wednesday stated that the charter was submitted to Santiago Villalpando, a senior official at the UNs International Covenant Office, on Monday (Oct 31).
With the submission of this charter, Indonesia has fulfilled its promise to complete the process of ratification of the Paris Agreement before the implementation of the 22nd Global Conference on Climate Change (CoP) on 7-8 November, 2016 in Marrakech, Morocco.
Ambassador Djani appreciated the hard work put in by Santiago Villalpando to ensure that the ratification of Paris Agreement happens sooner than was being expected.
Until October 31, 2016, 89 countries, including Indonesia, had ratified the Paris Agreement.
Ambassador Djani reiterated Indonesias commitment to implement the Paris Agreement to reduce Indonesias greenhouse gas emissions by 29 percent by 2030.
Santiago Villalpando welcomed the ratification document submitted by Ambassador Djani and pointed out that Indonesia can play a key role in dealing with climate change.
The Paris Agreement replaces the Kyoto Protocol and emphasizes the commitment to keep the global earth temperature rise well below 2 degrees Celsius.
