The world has changed but the UN still adopts an out-of-date system and mechanisms," Djani said.New York (ANTARA News) - Indonesia, along with other countries, has been constantly striving for structural reforms of the UN, Indonesian Permanent Representative to the UN Dian Triansyah Djani said.
"Indonesia has been making such efforts for quite a long time and of course, we will continue doing that. Indonesia is among the countries which are struggling for the reforms in the UN, not only at the UN Security Council but also at the UN General Assembly and various UN committees," he stated here on Friday.
He noted that the UN had long adopted a decision-making system and a mechanism to handle issues but these systems were no longer relevant to the current global conditions.
"The UN was founded in 1945. It is more than 70 years old. Clearly, that was a long time back and it needs reforms. The world has changed but the UN still adopts an out-of-date system and mechanisms," he lamented.
For its part, the newly-installed president of the UN General Assembly of Fiji is also looking forward to continuing discussions on the restructuring and reform of the UN, he noted.
"He has appointed several facilitators or non-chairs to bridge the gaps on specific issues, including the revitalization of the UN Security Council. Many countries, including Indonesia, have conveyed their views on the need to expand the membership of the UN Security Council," he informed.
In addition, many countries have also reiterated their call to restrict the use of veto rights at the UN. Therefore, there will be no veto rights in the UN in the future, he stressed.
"We express regret over the use of veto rights on the question of mass atrocities which involve many lives. This is obviously against the UN Charter," he emphasized.(*)
