Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia fully supports increased participation of women in United Nations peace missions, a foreign ministry official said here on Thursday.

"The role of women in UN peace missions is one of the important programs of the Indonesian government based on Vision Road Map for 4000 Peace Mission Personnel," the Director of International Disarmament and Security, Andy Rachmianto, said in a press statement.

He made the statement on Feb 8, 2017, in Sentul, Bogor, West Java, during a coordination meeting on preparations for the meeting linked to womens role in UN peace keeping missions to be held in the UN Headquarters in New York on Feb 23 and 24.

The coordination meeting was attended by stakeholders connected with peacekeeping missions from various institutions such as military, police, ministry of empowerment of womens role and child protection, as well as National Commission of Anti-Violence on Women.

The stakeholders discussed and identified a number of opportunities and challenges for womens participation in UN peacekeeping missions administratively, socially, culturally and operationally.

"The discussion is also aimed at supporting campaigns for Indonesias nomination as a member of the UN Security Council for 2019-2020," he stated.

Andy added that supporting women in the UN peacekeeping missions was one of the important contributions by the Indonesian government in advancing "Women, Peace and Security" agenda mandated by UN Resolution 1325 in 2000.

"The ratification of the UN Resolution 1325, along with various other resolutions derived from it, could be part of the importance of reference for advancing WPS agenda in various countries, including preparations for Resolution 1325 National Action Plan," he noted.

He added that 2,745 personnel from Indonesia were currently involved in nine UN peacekeeping missions, placing the country at the 11th position out of 125 countries involved.

Of the total, 60 are women spreading in various missions. The number is expected to increase with strong support from various institutions concerned," he remarked.
