"Don`t forget that other countries can convene their general elections within three months. By having 20 months from now, why can`t we?" Kalla said.
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla said he believed that the 2019 legislative and presidential elections would be held on time, despite the ongoing deliberation on the revised election bill at the House of Representatives.

"Dont forget that other countries can convene their general elections within three months. By having 20 months from now, why cant we?" he said here, Tuesday, when commenting on the upcoming elections, scheduled to be held on April 17, 2019.

According to Kalla, the legislative and presidential elections have routinely been held in Indonesia, and whether the election system applies a closed or open primary system, for instance, is dependent on political parties internal decisions.

Apart from the ongoing deliberation for the election bill, the General Election Commission (KPU) should be able to update its permanent voters list, he said.

Interior Minister Tjahjo Kumolo earlier stated that the issuance of a regulation in lieu of law (Perppu) on general elections was not yet necessary because there was enough time to deliberate the election bill.

"Why should the regulation in lieu of law necessarily be issued right now, because there is still enough time to deliberate the election bill within the special committee," he said.(*)
