Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian House Speaker Puan Maharani has urged the National Police to enforce the law transparently and thoroughly investigate the death of an online motorcycle taxi (ojek) driver, who was run over by a police tactical vehicle during a protest on Thursday.

Maharani reminded security officers to act in accordance with standard operating procedures to ensure no one is harmed.

"Do not use excessive force, let alone injure people," she said in a statement on Friday.

The protest was triggered by Thursday's rally at the Parliamentary Complex, which ended with the death of 21-year-old Affan Kurniawan, an ojol driver struck by a police tactical vehicle seen moving toward protesters in widely circulated videos.

Maharani also called for protection for another protester who was injured during the dispersal of the crowd.

"Victims who were injured during the protest yesterday must be properly protected and treated until they recover," she added.

Maharani emphasized that the House of Representatives (DPR) will listen to the public's aspirations voiced during the recent demonstrations. However, she reminded people to express their opinions peacefully.

"The DPR listens and understands people's aspirations. Everything will be followed up in accordance with a clear mechanism. The DPR is committed to consistently improving itself," she said.

Maharani also expressed her condolences to the family of the motorcycle taxi driver who died during the protest.

"May his soul rest in God’s grace," she said.
