Porlasi chief Rear Admiral Darwanto in a statement, said that athletes from 12 provinces, as well as athletes from Singapore and Malaysia, would take part in the trial competitions.
"Besides testing the readiness for the Asian Games, we hope we can use the championship to prepare the athletes. We will also use it to select potential athletes," he revealed.
Sailing athletes from Indonesia are being trained through the national championship to make them more competitive while also giving them an opportunity to meet athletes from other countries.
With regard to the Asian Games next year, Darwanto stressed Porlasi had set a target of contributing at least with two gold medals.
"We have set a target of being among the top ten or collect at least two gold medals from laser and windsurfing events. We have been intensifying our efforts to meet the target," he highlighted.
Porlasi is intensifying regeneration as part of the efforts to produce new champions at Asean, Asian or world levels, and in view of that, it will select potential athletes from across the country.
"Regeneration must be continued. A cadre is now available to replace Oka Sulaksana, who happens to be his son," he remarked.
Darwanto said a total of 450 sailing athletes have been registered so far, and they have been grouped into several classes. ***4***
