Ambon (ANTARA News) - An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale jolted Dobo in the Aru Islands District, Maluku Province, here, Wednesday at 9:05 a.m. local time.

"We were panic-stricken, so we rushed out of our home, as we were afraid of the aftershocks. The earthquake caused strong tremors," Jos Labok, a local inhabitant of Dobo, said here, Wednesday.

The quake`s epicenter was located at 6.09 degrees southern latitude and 133.7 degrees eastern longitude, some 60 kilometers (km) southwest of Dobo, and at a depth of 10 km.

The quake was triggered by an active fault in the Aru basin zone, Moch Riyadi, head of the earthquake and tsunami center of the meteorology, climatology, and geophysics agency, stated.

The quake, rated at an intensity of III on the Modified Mercalli Intensity scale, did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami.
