Jakarta (ANTARA News) - An ASEAN Committee has been established in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in line with Southeast Asia`s keenness to promote awareness of the bloc in the South American country.

According to a press release from the Indonesian Embassy in Buenos Aires on Monday, country head representatives of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam signed a Memorandum of Intent of the Ambassadors/Head of Missions of ASEAN Member States in the Republic of Argentina on the Establishment of the ASEAN Committee in Buenos Aires (ACBA) on Apr 26.

In addition to raising awareness of the ASEAN, the ACBA aims to promote the ASEAN Community Vision 2025 to the accredited country.

"We, the ACBA, hope that the ASEAN would become the main driver for all activities of the bloc`s member country representatives in Argentina, especially in holding several promotional activities and enhancing people-to-people contacts," Indonesian Ambassador to Argentina Niniek Kun Naryatie stated.

The ACBA also aims to intensify cooperation between Argentina and the ASEAN member countries.

Countries in Latin America (MERCOSUR) have also expressed keenness to forge stronger cooperation with ASEAN following a foreign ministers` meeting of MERCOSUR and the ASEAN on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in September 2017.

The ACBA will complement other ASEAN Committees that had been established in other South American countries, such as in Brazil, Chile, Peru, Mexico, and Venezuela.
