Bogor (ANTARA News) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has ordered periodic checks on the worthiness of all passenger boats here on Wednesday, following a boat capsize in Lake Toba, North Sumatra, recently.

"I also ordered the Ministry of Transportation and Regional Transportation Services to conduct routine check on passenger boats to assure security and safety," he stated at a press conference, in connection with the incident in the company of Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi and chief National Search and Rescue Agency, Vice Marshal Muhammad Syaugi.

KM Sinar Bangun, which was estimated to carry more than 200 people, capsized in Lake Toba, North Sumatra, at 5.30 p.m. on Monday. So far, 19 passengers have been saved, while three others have been found dead.

The boat has a capacity of carrying only 43 passengers, but it had no manifest to confirm the exact number of the passengers on the boat.

Jokowi noted that the incident must never recur in the future. "I have called against its recurrence. I have also ordered the Minister of Transportation to evaluate all safety standards for ferries," he noted.

Jokowi expressed his deep sympathy and condolences to the victims of the incident.

"On behalf of myself and all the people of Indonesia, I express my deepest condolences to those who died in the incident," he pointed out.
