Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Police have netted 242 people in connection with bomb attacks in Surabaya, East Java, in May.

"Twenty-one of them have been shot for defying arrests," Indonesia Police chief General Tito Karnavian said here on Monday.

He stated that the anticipatory measure against terrorism was part of the preparation for the Asian Games 2018 in Jakarta and Palembang from Aug 18 to Sept 2.

He noted that Polri (police) and TNI (military) have taken security measures ahead of the implementation of the Asian biggest sporting event, because some events have been scheduled before Aug 18, while a number of contingents, officials, and advanced teams would arrive earlier.

"Some of them have even checked locations, warming-up facilities, and others," he added.

Apart from netting suspected terrorist network members, the police have also carried out operations to prevent potential threats of conventional crimes, such as pickpockets, snatchers, robbers, and others.

Karnavian remarked that the operations have been carried out by four regional police commands, which are Jakarta Metropolitan Police Command, West Java, Central Java, and South Sumatra police commands.

He revealed that security forces have also been pro-active in preventing land or forest fires in South Sumatra and Jambi.

"Arrest those who are found causing fire and watch traffic condition, especially in Jakarta," he pointed out.
