Palembang, S. Sumatra (ANTARA News) - Chinese rower Zhang Liang won the first gold medal in the men`s single sculls finals held at Jakabaring Sport City (JSC) Palembang, South Sumatra, on Thursday, as part of the 18th Asian Games.

South Korean rower Kim Dongyong won the second place, followed by Japanese rower Ryuta Arakawa.

In the women`s single sculls, Chinese rower Chen Yunxia won the gold medal, while the silver medal went to Chinese Taipei athlete Huang Ying and bronze medal was grabbed by Kazakhstan rower Opachanova Aleksandra.

The medals for men`s single sculls were awarded by South Sumatra`s Governor Alex Noerdin at the venue, while medals for the women`s single sculls were awarded by South Sumatra Provincial Secretary Nasrun Oemar.

Eight gold medals were contested on the first day of the final round held at JSC.

Of the eight gold medals, two medals are up for grabs in the men`s and women`s single sculls, two medals in the men`s and women`s lightweight four, and two gold medals in the men`s and women`s doubles.
