Jakarta, (ANTARA News) - Singapore`s Joseph Isaac Schooling proved to be the fastest swimmer in the men`s 50-meter butterfly qualifying round at the Asian Games 2016 on Thursday, despite competing in two different events the day before.

The 23-year-old swimmer bagged a gold medal in the men`s 100-meter butterfly and contributed a bronze medal to his country in the men`s 4x100 freestyle relay on Wednesday.

Schooling, who clocked in at 23.84 seconds in the qualifying round, did not look exhausted while competing closely with China`s Wang Peng, who finished with a time of 23.89 seconds, and Kazakhstan`s Adilbek Mussin, who recorded a time of 23.91 seconds.

Speaking to the press after the qualifying round, the Singapore swimmer said he had slept only a little as he had to complete the competition until the night and wake up early to prepare for the qualifying round.

But he added that he had no problem with any of that, as he had moved on to the finals tonight.

"I am happy with my achievements now. I am in a far better condition than last year," he said.

Schooling finished first in the men`s 100-meter butterfly swimming event at the Aquatic center of Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta on Wednesday evening.

The Olympic medalist also made a new Asian Games record of 51.04 seconds, breaking his own previous record of 51.76 seconds.

Schooling defeated Chinese swimmer Li Zhuhao, who won a silver medal by clocking in at 51.46 seconds. Japanese Yuki Kobori finished third with a bronze medal.
