Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Two Chinese athletes broke the Asian Games record in the women`s 20 kilometer (km) walk finals at the Asian Games 2018 in Jakarta on Wednesday morning.

Jiayu Yang and Shijie Qieyang of China clocked in at 1:29:15 and 1:29:15 respectively to break the Asian Games record of 1:30:6 set by her compatriot Hong Liu at the Asian Games 2010 in Guangzhou, China.

Yang, who finished first in the women`s 20 km walk finals, won the gold medal, while Qieyang, who came second, secured the silver medal.

The bronze medal was bagged by Kumiko Okada of Japan, with a time of 1:34:02.

Soon after the race started at 6:20 a.m. local time, the two Chinese athletes waged a fierce competition. At the 10-km and 12-km mark, Qieyang led the race, with Yang trailing behind in the second spot.

Yang overtook Qieyang at the 14-km and 18-km mark and finished first, with a time of 1:29:15, to clinch a gold medal.

The women`s 20 km walk finals covered the route from and to the Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta via the Lapangan Tembak traffic light and Senayan golf court.
