Nusa Dua, Bali, (ANTARA News) - Bali Governor Wayan Koster said the huge statue of Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) at the Cultural Park in Bali, commissioned by President Joko Widodo on Saturday, is expected to be a tourism icon for the tourist island and Indonesia in general.

The third tallest statue in the world is expected to draw more tourists to Bali, Wayan Koster said.

The governor thanked the President for commissioning the statue of Hindo God Wisnu.

"Thank you Mr President for coming here to commission the statue of GWK the work of the nation`s children" the governor said when addressing the ceremony.

The governor also expressed thanks to Mr Nyoman Nuarta, the chief sculptor, and the consultants involved in designing and building the 121 meter tall statue.

The governor said the Cultural Park is expected to draw more tourists to Bali, which has often been favored to host international meetings.

More than 15,000 delegates to the annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank to be held in Nusa Dua next month are also expected to visit the Cultural park.

It was scheduled that delegates to the IMF-WB meeting would hold a gala dinner in the GWK Cultural Park that it would soon be known to the world.

President Jokowi commissioned the statue in a ceremony attended by the First Lady Iriana Joko Widodo, Indonesia`s fifth President Megawati Sukarnoputri, former Vice President Try Sutrisno and number of Cabinet Ministers.

"I see the statue not only as Bali`s cultural icon or Indonesian tourism icon but a milestone in the history of the nation that could produce a masterpiece," the president said.
