Director General of America and Europe at the Indonesian foreign Ministry Muhammad Anshor and US Ambassador to Indonesia Joseph R. Donovan Jr. signed a letter of intent on promoting closer cyberspace cooperation in Jakarta on Friday (Sept 28), the ministry noted in a press statement released on Saturday.
The two countries signed the letter of intent to realize their commitment to promoting cyberspace cooperation agreed upon during Indonesian President Joko Widodo`s visit to the United States in October 2015.
Anshor said international cyberspace cooperation including that with the United States held significance to address the growing cyber challenges and problems.
"The letter of intent is based on the existing partnership and will strengthen cyber cooperation to support democratic spirit and economic growth," he stated.
Also present during the signing of the letter of intent were representatives of relevant ministries and non-ministerial government institutions including the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, State Cyber and Code Agency, National Police, and related working units at the Foreign Ministry.
The letter of intent will serve as a framework to promote cyberspace cooperation and national capacity building and strengthen institutions including the state cyber and code agency responsible for consolidating national cyber security.
The areas of cyberspace cooperation include discussions on the development of a national cyberspace strategy, national incident management capacity, cooperation and capacity in the handling of cyber crimes, and the promotion of awareness about cyber security.
The two nations will later formulate a plan of action to identify concrete activities related to the cooperation based on the letter of intent.
