Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The president of the Asian Paralympic Committee (APC), Majid Rashed, said the Asian Para Games 2018 is very important for the Paralympic movement in Asia and helps realize APC`s vision.

"The organization of the event can become a stimulus for other bigger movements. Athletes who compete for the first time at the Asian Para Games could emerge again to compete here, such as Paralympic medalists," he said in his speech at the opening ceremony at the Games here on Saturday.

He hoped the participation of athletes at the Asian Para Games 2018 could motivate young people with disabilities across Asia. "We wish they would believe there is no limitation for them to be able to achieve their goals," he said.

He also hoped the event would also eradicate barriers separating people with disabilities from those with no disability. "We hope people will also become inclusive," he added.

"Since my first visit here, I feel there has been a big change with regard to people`s awareness and behavior toward people with special needs. Indonesia should have been proud of what it has achieved. Indonesia is great," he said.

The Asian Para Games 2018 has shown Asia and other parts of the world that Jakarta and Indonesia are places where all people are welcome, included and appreciated.

"We feel as if we are home in Jakarta. All people, including thousands of smiling volunteers, have accepted us," he said.

He thanked them for having taken part and supported the Asian Para Games 2018.
