Manado, N Sulawesi, (ANTARA News) - Air Asia plans to start operations on the Kuala Lumpur-Manado route via Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia.

"This is the part of the commitment of North Sulawesi Governor Olly Dondokambey and Vice Governor Steven Kandouw to promote the tourism sector," Chief of the North Sulawesi Provincial Tourism Office Daniel Mewengkang here on Saturday.

Mewengkang said the North Sulawesi provincial government warmly welcomed the plan to open the flight route using I Sam Ratulangi International Airport.

"The opening of the flight route will help the tourism sector in this region," he said.

The increase in the number of tourist arrivals in the province with a population of 2.5 million will contribute to the operation of chartered flights from many cities in China.

"Of course, the opening of the flight route will have a positive impact on the tourism industry in the region," he said.

The Manado immigration office also threw its weight behind the plan to start the flight route.

"Please Air Asia open the flight route. We fully support it," it said.

Head of Commercial Operation Executive of Air Asia Group Jack Jefferson conducted a survey and held a dialog with the chief of the provincial tourism office, Daniel Mewengkang, and Chief of Manado Immigration Office Friece Sumolang and special staff member of the North Sulawesi governor for tourism Dino Gobel.
