Based on the latest report, the tsunami left 222 people killed, 843 other people injured with 28 more still missing mainly in beach resorts of the province of Banten.
"In fact the Tarakan hospital (which is owned by the city administration in Jakarta) already received a number of victims today. We make ready hospitals under the provincial administration to accommodate tsunami victims," acting chief of the Jakarta Health Service Khafifah Any said at the Tarakan Hospital on Sunday night.
Khafifah said hospitals in Jakarts would be open for victims from Jakarta but also from other regions.
"Not only those from Jakarta but also from other regions not having enough hospital beds," Khafifah said.
The Jakarta provincial administration has sent a medical team with 13 ambulances from the Tarakan hospital, the Jakarta Health Service and Jakarta burial Service to Banten. It also has sent Search and Rescue team to help in the process of evacuation.
The Jakarta provincial administration would be ready to provide more aid it could if requested by Banten, Khafifah said.
The Tarakan Hospital already received 11 injured victims and 10 dead victims evacuated by the medical team from Banten. Excepting two of the injured patients, they are all workers of the hospital on a tour to the beach resort of Banten.
The tsunami struck when many domestic tourists especially from Jakarta flocked to the Carita and Karang Bolong beaches and other places in the western coasts of the province of Banten during the Christmas holidays.
The authorities said the tsunami was probably triggered by landslides underwater after repeated eruptions of Anak Krakatau volcano in the middle of the sea in the Sunda strait. The volcano has frequently erupted over the past month spewing hot volcanic materials. The authorities have warned tourist to stay away for certain radius from the angry volcano.
Meanwhile, Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan said the provincial administration is ready to help in way it could in coping with the tsunami disaster.
"We are ready to offer whatever needed. This morning we sent ambulance. We will see what we could do to help Banten," Anies said when visiting the Tarakan hospital on Sunday night.
He said hospitals in Jakarta are open for victims evacuated from Banten, and all costs including for the burial of dead victims from Jakarta are free, he said.
The tsunami had also damaged and destroyed 556 houses, nine hotels, 60 food stalls and 350 ships and boats.
