Mataram, W Nusa Tenggara, (ANTARA News) - An earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale shook Dompu district, West Nusa Tenggara province, on Wednesday night, according to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG),

The epicenter of the earthquake which struck at 10.26 p.m. local time was in the sea 124 kilometers southwest of Dompu city at a depth of 10 kilometers, Head of the BMKG Office in Mataram, Agus Riyanto said.

The shallow earthquake resulted from the sub-duction activity of Indo-Australia fault that penetrated Eurasia fault, he said.

The earthquake was felt by people in Bima district at III-IV and Sumbawa at III on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI).

"There was no immediate report of damage caused by the earthquake," he said.

The earthquake did not have the potential to cause a tsunami.

According to the result of monitoring by BMKG, no aftershock was recorded as of 10.40 p.m. local time.

However, Agus called on the public to remain calm and not to be easily influenced by hoaxes.
