Yogyakarta (ANTARA News) - Mount Merapi, which straddles the provinces of Central Java and Yogyakarta, spewed incandescent lava from its crater 19 times on Tuesday, Jan 22, the Center for Technological Research and Development for Geological Disasters (BPPTKG) in Yogyakarta stated.

On its official twitter account, the BPPTKG recorded a total of 19 lava falls during its three periods of observation between 00.00 and 06.00 m local time on that day.

In the first period of observation, from 00.00 to 06.00 am, the volcano spewed incandescent lava seven times, with the duration of the lava falls reaching 14 to 46 seconds based on seismic data.

The agency recorded seven lava falls from 06.00 to 12.00 am, with the duration of 14 to 56 seconds, and six lava falls from 00.00 to 06.00 pm, with the duration of 27 to 60 seconds.

During the observation, none of the lava falls was observed as haze, and cloud shrouded the volcano.

As of Jan 16, 2019, the volume of lava dome in the country`s most active volcano was recorded at 453 thousand cu meters, with the growth rate of 2.3 thousand cu meters per day, lower than that of the previous week.

The BPPTKG continues to maintain the alert status of the volcano at level II (caution) of the four-tiered Indonesia volcano alert system.

The agency also called on local residents to avoid conducting activities within a three-kilometer radius of the volcano`s peak.
