Banda Aceh, Aceh, (ANTARA News) - The Myanmar authorities again detained 23 Aceh fishermen on February 6, 2019, for alleged poaching in Myanmar waters, according to Miftachhuddin Cut Adek, deputy secretary of Panglima Laot, a maritime customary NGO of Aceh.

The Myanmar Navy nabbed the Aceh fishing boat carrying 23 crew members off Zardatgyi Island, Kawthoung District, Taninthayi, Myanmar, he said here, Wednesday.

The Navy has handed over the Indonesian fishermen to the Kawthoung District authorities, he added.

The Aceh fishermen left Aceh on Jan 29, 2019, and got arrested on Feb 6, 2019.

"The Aceh fishing boat entered Myanmar waters by accident because its compass was broken. The fishermen thought that they were still within Aceh water territory," he said.

On November 6, 2018, 16 Aceh fishermen were detained by the Myanmar authorities for poaching in the neighboring country.

Fourteen of the fishermen were later released and returned to Aceh Province, while one was dead during the arrest and another is still being held by the Myanmar government who charged him with illegal fishing activities.
