Putussibau, W Kalimantan (ANTARA) - Unremitting, torrential downpour, lashing over the last few days, resulted in Kapuas River overflowing its bank and triggered flooding in Kapuas Hulu District, West Kalimantan Province, since Saturday.

The floodwaters reached heights of between one and two meters, Hatta, a local rescuer, noted here, Monday.

The sub-districts of Bunut Hulu, Putussibau Selatan, Bika, Putussibau Utara, Embaloh Hilir, Badau, and Bunut Hilir in Kapuas Hulu District are reeling under the impact of flooding.

"The floodwaters have begun subsiding, though the weather is yet overcast. Hence, there is a high likelihood of the water levels rising again," he pointed out.

The local residents have been called upon to maintain vigil in the face of a possibly large scale of flooding.

Floods reportedly hit various provinces in Indonesia, including Bengkulu and South Sumatra on Sumatra Island, Jakarta; West Java and East Java on Java Island; Central Sulawesi on Sulawesi Island; and West Papua on Papua Island.

In Bengkulu, massive flooding took the lives of 29 people and rendered 13 others missing. In Jakarta, flooding caused the deaths of two people and resulted in the displacement of 12 thousand others.
