Tanjung Selor, North Kalimanta (ANTARA) - Heavy rains in the Sajau River upstream area in Giram Batu Tulis Sub-district, Berau District, triggered flash floods that swamped three villages in Tanjung Palas Timur Sub-district, Bulungan District, North Kalimantan Province, on Sunday.

Sajau Metun, Tanjung Agung, and Wonomulyo were the three villages affected by the flooding, Pandi, the North Kalimantan disaster mitigation office (BPBD) head, remarked here, on Sunday.

Flooding started at dawn, and the flood waters kept spreading to wider areas, Yamin, a resident of Tanjung Agung SP 4, revealed.

Residential areas in the three villages were inundated by flood waters reaching heights of between 50 and 80 centimeters.

The flooding was triggered by continual heavy downpours and the conversion of forest land into palm oil plantation, Yamin noted.
